Kitchen Refresh vs. Full Remodel: Planning the Scope

How to decide between refreshing a kitchen and fully remodeling it — layout, cabinets, plumbing, timing and what to keep.

"Remodel the kitchen" can mean very different projects. Deciding which one you mean is the most useful first step.

A refresh might be enough if…

  • The layout works for how you cook.
  • Cabinet boxes are solid and dry.
  • Appliances stay where they are.
  • You mainly dislike the look.

A refresh can include cabinet painting, new hardware, a backsplash, paint and flooring.

A remodel may be needed if…

  • The layout doesn't work.
  • Cabinets are water-damaged or falling apart.
  • You want to move the sink, range or walls.

Moving plumbing, gas or electrical and changing walls involve licensed trades and often permits.

Make two lists

  1. Keep — what works and stays.
  2. Change — what bothers you.

Think about living through it

How long can you go without a kitchen? Plan around that.
